Saklikent Gorge - Daring Adventure

This was my wildest adventure to date (except for the outrageous mountain death drive) a narrow slit canyon just like something in Zion's back in Utah. We took the bus from Fethiye, about 45 minutes. Rolled into a frenzy of activity, tubes, rafts, jeeps, helmets, guides, wooden platforms for lounging along the raging river, tour buses, souvenir stands, hookah pipes, it all assaulted your senses!!!!! Back in the states the environmentalists would be going crazy for all the abuse of the river and gorge.
Anyway, we managed to bypass all this stuff and head straight to the gorge. You paid around $2 to get in, followed a wooden walk for a bit then descended to the river. There you had to cross the raging river in water so cold (it's coming out of the high mountains) it literally took my breath away. I gave Chris my small pack to carry, good thing since I was in chest deep water.
We saw saw some people coming back and asked about the conditions, they said the water would be up to your neck......
We forged ahead, thinking if it got too bad we could turn around. After walking awhile we met a great British couple maybe, 15 years younger. They had an uninvited guide with them. Chris wanted no part of the guide (macho man DIY mentality) well at this point things weren't too bad. So we continued forward chatting with the couple, enjoying the gorge. Conditions began to worsen, the guide offered his hand several times, pointed out foot holds, places to walk, which we women were grateful for. When Chris didn't listen to the guide, trying to get out ahead, he took an unplanned dip, over his head! That did it, we watched the guide carefully from then on (we women that is) there were places where we couldn't even clamber over the huge boulders with out the guides help. There was a second guide assisting. This is when I am thinking wish I weighted about 100 pounds less and had muscle arms. The guide had to push me up by my derrière with the other guide pulling, it was that bad. Even the younger women we were with had to be pushed pulled! At this point it became a challenge to get to the end, some waterfalls. We continued on thinking of the rewarding sight of the falls. Well, when we saw the falls it was anticlimactic - dinky!! But we did feel a sense of accomplishment.
Going back was a lot easier, we got to slide down the enormous smooth boulders. The entire adventure took around two hours.
